Can you play Find The Needle with friends?
Find The Needle multiplayer is available through an unofficial demo co-op mod, while the game's native Steam listing identifies single-player support. That distinction matters before you organize a session: the mod has its own build requirements, installation steps, and save behavior. The setup below follows the mod author's documentation rather than a personal gameplay test.
As checked November 3, 2026, the official Find The Needle Steam page still lists November 6 as the planned Early Access release. Do not assume that instructions written for the demo also establish compatibility with the forthcoming main game.
Check the demo co-op requirements first
The AleDev11 co-op mod documentation specifies the free Steam demo, build V26 or newer, and 64-bit Windows. Everyone needs the same mod version and must launch the game through Steam for invitations to work.
The documented connection uses Steam's relay network. You do not need to exchange IP addresses or configure port forwarding for that route. An advanced direct-IP option also exists, but Steam invitations are the straightforward documented starting point.
Before installing, agree on who will host. That player will own the session's saved progress, which becomes important when you return another day.
Install the mod and invite your friends
- Obtain the mod ZIP from its linked Releases page and extract it.
- In Steam, right-click the demo and choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- Copy the extracted
modsfolder besideFindTheNeedle.exe. - Open
override.cfgin that same directory. Add an[autoload]section with the entryMPMod="*mods/multiplayer/mp.gd". If that section already exists, add only the MPMod entry beneath it. - Launch the demo through Steam and look for MULTIPLAYER in the main menu.
The host chooses MULTIPLAYER, CREATE GAME, and INVITE FRIENDS, then starts or loads a save. Guests accept the Steam invitation. According to the documentation, accepting an invite can also start a closed game.
Game updates can replace override.cfg, removing the entry that loads the mod. If the menu disappears after updating, check that file before reinstalling everything. To remove the mod, the author documents deleting its autoload entry and the mods folder.
Understand shared progress and troubleshoot mismatches
Community mod documentation describes a shared haystack, buildings, money, technology, and needle collection. Uncovered needles are visible to everyone and can only be handed in once. Loose items and conveyor cargo also synchronize, making it possible to divide the yard's work.
There are several practical limits:
- Only the host saves; guests do not write session progress to their own save files.
- Machines perform their actual processing on the host.
- Purchased tools belong to individual players even though money is shared.
- The online leaderboard is disabled while the mod is loaded.
- Simultaneous purchases can briefly push shared money below zero.
If Steam is reported unavailable, check that you launched through Steam rather than directly from the executable. If a friend cannot join, compare mod versions in the multiplayer panel. If the yard differs between players, the documented resync key is F8; F2 opens the panel and Y opens chat.
FAQ
Is this official multiplayer support?
No. The documented demo co-op is a community mod unaffiliated with the developer. It should be assessed separately from the native game's features.
Can a guest keep playing the shared save alone?
The documentation says only the host saves. Do not expect joining a session to create an equivalent local save for the guest.
Does everyone need to install the mod?
Yes. The requirements call for matching mod versions on every machine, alongside a compatible demo build.
Will the demo mod work with Early Access?
The supplied instructions establish demo V26+ support. They do not confirm compatibility with the main game's planned November 6 release.
