Build around the rake's landing point
An automatic rake is only useful if the hay reaches your conveyor. A working Find The Needle piston rake setup combines a position that reaches the pile, electricity, and a throw aimed onto the belt. Tune those before investing in more rakes or faster extraction.
This setup comes from recorded player experience, including GrayStillPlays' progression, rather than personal gameplay testing. As checked November 3, 2026, the official Find The Needle Steam page lists Early Access for November 6.
Unlock the rake and supporting equipment required by your current tutorial and tech tree. A recording includes a tutorial-provided rake, but that does not establish that every version or start gives you one free. Check the build catalog for the actual construction requirement.
Supply fuel and connect electricity
Placing the rake does not make it run on its own. In the collected player experience, the hay generator needs hay, and a power pole links the generator with the rake. Positioning a generator close to the pile does not feed its fuel input.
Before judging the rake's placement, check that the generator is fueled and operating, the power connection reaches the rake, and the network supplies enough electricity for the active machines. Then confirm the rake is switched on and positioned to work on the pile.
Start with manual fuel if necessary. The recorded setup later uses an arm to maintain fuel input, reducing repeated trips with a shovel. Keep the distinction clear: a generator that empties needs hay, while a fueled network that cannot meet demand needs its generating output and connected load checked.
Adjust the throw onto a clear conveyor
The recording's key correction is adjusting where the rake throws the hay. The player watches the landing point and changes the throw until the hay reaches the conveyor reliably.
- Set up a receiving belt where the rake can deliver to it.
- Run the rake briefly and observe where the hay lands.
- Adjust the throw toward the middle of the receiving section.
- Watch several deliveries before leaving it unattended.
- Follow the hay to confirm that the belt carries it to the intended destination.
A belt that catches only some output creates loose hay and makes a functioning rake look less productive. Adjusting the landing point is more useful than immediately adding another intake machine to the unreliable route.
Leave room for the receiving belt and nearby power equipment. If the belt is already full, solve that blockage before changing the throw again.
Upgrade the part that limits the line
Once the rake reliably feeds the conveyor, compare intake with the rest of production. The recorded player experience uses rake-speed upgrades but also encounters conveyor capacity and electricity limits while expanding.
If extraction is slow and everything downstream is clear, a relevant rake upgrade may help. If hay accumulates on the belt, inspect the belt or next machine first. If upgrades raise electricity demand beyond supply, restore power capacity before scaling further.
The selected material does not establish a universal best rake count, throw distance, or current power figure. Use the values and warnings in your build rather than treating one recording's factory as a fixed blueprint.
FAQ
Why does my piston rake do nothing?
Check fuel, generator operation, the power connection, and whether the rake can reach the pile. The recorded setup needs electricity before the rake operates.
Why is the hay missing the belt?
Adjust the rake's throw and watch the landing point. Recorded player experience shows this correction making the intake route work.
Is the first piston rake always free?
That is not established. A recording includes a tutorial-provided rake, but rewards and construction requirements need checking in your current build.
Should I build another rake immediately?
First confirm that the existing rake lands its output correctly and that belts, power, and downstream processing can handle more hay. More extraction does not clear an existing blockage.
