Give each arm a specific job

A robotic arm can remove the chore that keeps pulling you away from the rest of your factory. For a useful Find The Needle robotic arms setup, start with one clear task: move hay from the pile onto a belt, or maintain the generator's fuel supply. Then confirm the source, destination, reach, and power before scaling up.

The setup details below come from collected player experience, especially the GrayStillPlays recording, rather than personal gameplay testing. As checked November 3, 2026, the official Find The Needle Steam page lists Early Access for November 6. Current prices, prerequisites, and balance should be read from your own build.

Unlock plans and place the arm within reach

In the recording, the player buys the small-arm plans before constructing the physical machine. Keep enough money for construction after research; owning plans does not itself place an arm in the factory.

Choose a position where the arm can reach the intended source and a receiving conveyor. Leave the belt accessible so you can see whether it is actually collecting the delivered hay.

The recorded player experience distinguishes the pile from other possible material choices. If the goal is continuous extraction, select the pile rather than leaving the arm configured for loose material you do not intend it to collect. A reachable empty source can make a powered arm appear idle even though its real problem is configuration.

Select the source and a working belt destination

The key recorded instruction is that arms drop onto belts. The player adjusts placement and source selection before the arm feeds the intended route.

Use a short test rather than immediately building several arms:

  1. Place and power one arm near the intended hay source.
  2. Choose the source material appropriate to its job.
  3. Set or arrange its drop onto the receiving belt using your available controls.
  4. Watch several pickups and deliveries.
  5. Follow that belt to confirm the hay reaches the correct machine or sale route.

If the arm moves but supplies the wrong place, inspect the destination and nearby belt layout. If it stays idle, check source reach, available material, electricity, and space on the receiving route.

Use an arm to keep the generator supplied

Fuel delivery is a particularly useful early assignment. The recorded player initially keeps the generator running manually, then builds an arm to keep hay flowing into its supply. That turns electricity maintenance into part of the automated line.

You still need electricity to operate the arm. Supply initial fuel manually when starting an empty setup, then verify that the arm delivers enough hay to sustain it. A machine added to the network also adds demand, so an automated fuel route is not a promise of unlimited power.

Watch the generator over time. If its fuel buffer steadily falls, improve the delivery route or intake capacity. If fuel is available but the network lacks output, inspect generating capacity rather than only increasing the arm's speed.

Match arm upgrades to the next bottleneck

The collected player experience identifies arm speed and arm carry-size upgrades. Faster movement and larger loads both affect how much hay the arm can deliver, but the useful choice depends on the line receiving that hay.

If the arm is the limiting input, inspect those upgrades in your tech tree. If its belt is already full, additional intake simply pushes more work toward the existing blockage. Check downstream processing, scanners, and electricity before adding more arms.

The recording also names standard and long-reach arms. Their presence supports planning for different reach needs, but the selected material does not establish one universal best arm or a current price-and-output table.

FAQ

Why did buying arm plans not give me an arm?

The recorded progression separates buying plans from constructing the machine. Look in the build catalog after unlocking the appropriate research.

Why does my powered arm fail to collect hay?

Check its selected source and whether that source is within reach. Also inspect the receiving route; a blocked destination can prevent a useful flow.

Can an arm supply hay to a generator?

Yes. Recorded player experience uses an arm to maintain generator fuel delivery through the belt arrangement, reducing manual refueling.

Should I upgrade speed or carry size first?

The material supports both upgrade types but no universal ranking. Use the current descriptions and watch whether your actual fuel or production route needs more delivery capacity.
